My baby is already 3 weeks old… is it too late?

One of the most common questions I receive as a newborn photographer serving Katy and Houston families is whether it’s too late to schedule newborn photos after the first three weeks.

While the ideal window for classic newborn photography is within the first three weeks of life, beautiful portraits are still possible beyond that stage — with the right approach.

Why the First 3 Weeks Are Recommended

During the first three weeks, babies:

• Sleep more deeply

• Naturally curl into womb-like positions

• Have greater flexibility

• React less to handling

This allows for traditional curled newborn poses to be achieved safely and comfortably.

That’s why booking during pregnancy is always recommended for studio newborn photography in Houston and Katy, TX.

What Changes After 3 Weeks?

After three weeks, babies tend to:

• Stay awake longer

• Stretch their bodies more

• Lose some flexibility

• Become more reactive

This doesn’t mean a session isn’t possible.

It simply means the approach must adapt.

The Best Option: Wrapped Newborn Sessions

For babies over three weeks old, wrapped sessions are often the most successful approach.

Wrapping:

• Provides comfort and containment

• Mimics the womb environment

• Reduces startle reflex

• Allows for secure, elegant posing

• Maintains a timeless, minimalist look

A wrapped session is not a compromise — it’s an intentional and refined solution.

What to Expect

Depending on your baby’s temperament, sessions may include:

• Wrapped portraits

• Parent connection images

• Eye-open expressions

• Simpler, baby-led posing

With over 15 years of experience, I guide every session safely in my private studio.
